Ethel Smith

FRYEBURG — Ethel “Red” Smith, 100, of Fryeburg passed away peacefully Dec. 5, 2010 at Mineral Springs of North Conway.

Red was born March 5, 1910 in Stow, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel Smith Hall. She attended local schools and graduated from Fryeburg Academy Class of 1926. She then attended secretarial school in Boston. Red was a bookkeeper for Western Maine Forest Nursery for many years before purchasing and operating Hall and Smith Dowel Mill with her husband Bob Smith during the 50s and 60s. Red traveled to Mexico each winter where she made many dear friends and followed her passion for helping people and children at Hogar-Infantile Orphanage in Chiapas State Mexico.

Ethel was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Mass.

Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Robert Smith; her sisters, Evelyn Haley and Dorothy McSherry; and her brother, Nelson Hall.

She is survived by her family of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in January 2011 at Wood Funeral Home at a time to be announced. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are made with Wood Funeral Home, Fryeburg. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.woodfuneralhome.org
