Ernest R. Libby

WINDHAM — Ernest R. Libby, 79, of Windham, died peacefully on March 25, 2011.

Ernie was born in Westbrook, the son of Percy O. Libby Sr. and Bernice B. Peterson. He attended Westbrook schools, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. He served in the military for nine years, fought in the Korean War, achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class, and spent time stationed in Japan. He then worked at the S.D. Warren Paper Mill, retiring after 28 years.

Ernie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Westbrook for over 15 years. He served as a deacon, and was active on many church boards. Most recently he was a member of Christ Chapel in Raymond, and volunteered at the food pantry with his wife, Patricia. Ernie was noted for his love of singing in the choir, for his thoughtful prayers, and his dedication to fellowship in God. Ernie was well known for his positive view on life, and his enthusiasm to share his love of God. He always made a point of saying, “May the Good Lord bless you, and have a good day” as parting words to everyone he met.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, and taking advantage of all the state of Maine has to offer. Favorite pastimes included hunting and fishing with his son, Mike, blueberry picking at many favorite spots, and playing horseshoes with friends.

Ernie was predeceased by his parents; his older brother, Percy O. Libby Jr., and by his younger brother, Calvin Libby.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Patricia June Libby, Windham; daughters, Kimberly Sanborn of Buxton and Pamela Libby of Lebanon; son, Michael Libby of Naples; a grandson and three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson.

A service celebrating Ernie’s life will be held on Sunday, April 3, at Christ Chapel in Raymond at 2 p.m. Directions can be found at www.christchapelmaine.org. Funeral arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.
