WELLS — Emmeretta E. Brown, 96, of Wells, passed away May 19, 2011 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her loving family and nurses.

She was born in Wells, on the Steven Eaton Rd., July 23, 1914 the daughter of Howard and Estella (Bridges) York. She was raised on the family farm on Newhall Rd. and attended school at the Division 7 School house.

Emmeretta was later employed at the North Berwick Woolen Mill, the Great Works Woolen Mill, in South Berwick, and the Baxter Woolen Mill in Rochester, N.H.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Nelson Brown Sr. in 2004, a sister, Mildred York; three brothers, Irving, Norris, and Earl York; her stepfather George Raymond Newhall; and half-brothers, Frank and Percy Newhall.

She is survived by her two children, Nelson Brown Jr. and Shirley Rand; six grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Stephen Newhall of Bridgton.
