Ellen Shaw

SOUTH PORTLAND ­— Ellen Ruth Shaw, 92, of South Portland, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2015, at her residence. She was born in Harpswell, on Jan. 13, 1923, the daughter of George D. and Marion A. (Stilphen) Parmenter. She grew up on Orr’s Island, moved to Portland, and later settled in South Portland.

Ellen (Ma) was a housewife and stay at home mom but later on in her life, she worked as a cleaner for Maine Medical Center’s old “Rehab Center,” the Home for Aged Women in South Portland, and for her son’s cleaning company.

Ma loved to go out to eat and go for rides with her daughters, loved to play cards with friends and family on Thursday nights, enjoyed working on her puzzles and newspaper crosswords and picking greens every spring with her daughter.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Arthur L. Shaw Sr.; daughter, Barbara A. Tardy; a grandson; sisters, Nina Gilbert, Gertrude Foley and Marjorie DiMillo; and brothers, George and Russell Parmenter and James Clarke.

Ma will be missed greatly by her children, Donna J. Hodge of Scarborough, Karen L. Taylor of South Portland, Arthur L. Jr. of South Portland; 11 grandchildren including Laurie Hodge of Naples and Lawrence Taylor III of Raymond; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are under the guidance of Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
