Ellen Pecoraro

DENMARK — Ellen Greene Pecoraro, 77, of St. Pete Beach, Fla. and Denmark, passed away at a Florida hospital on Jan. 19, 2016.

Born Ellen Almeda Greene in Gorham on Sept. 29, 1938, she was the daughter of Ethel Foshay Greene and Elmo Greene. Ellen spent her formative years living on a farm on Fish Street in Fryeburg. She spoke often of her happy memories growing up on “the farm” with her siblings and many cousins.

Ellen attended schools in Fryeburg, graduating from Bridgton Academy in the class of 1956. Ellen and her husband, John, always enjoyed gathering each summer with her high school friends.

Ellen graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1961 with a degree in education. She taught in various capacities in Gray, Scarborough and Westbrook. While in Westbrook, she taught reading through the “Book Mobile,” taught fifth grade at Saccarappa, and taught in various capacities at Wescott Junior High School. She retired from the Westbrook school system in 1989. She was loved and respected by her many students, merited by her caring and dedicated teaching style. She ultimately received high honors while achieving her master’s degree in Literature at the University of Southern Maine. Her love of reading continued throughout her life. She would read up to a book a day.

Ellen married John Pecoraro on June 6, 1959. Together, they raised their four children in Westbrook, while spending their summers at the “camp” they built on Moose Pond in Denmark.

Ellen was creative, artistic and well spoken. She was spirited about her politics. Ellen had a passion for golf. She could one week be in heart failure, and the next week, win the award for “the longest drive” at her annual condo community golf tournament. Ellen had a gift of creating. Ellen quilted, crocheted, studied art and practiced yoga. These were amongst her many talents. And, her cooking was always delectable. Ellen loved playing bridge and was a member of the bridge club at the Community Center in Bridgton, the Legion in Fryeburg and the bridge club at St. Pete Beach, Fla.

Ellen basked in the love of her family. Ellen, “Mom,” “Mimi” leaves behind her loving husband of 58 years, John Pecoraro of St. Pete Beach, Fla. and Denmark; her four children, sons, John “Johnny” Pecoraro of Plano, Texas, Geanerean (Geano) Pecoraro of Westbrook and Christopher Pecoraro of Newtown Square, Pa., and daughter, Angela Pecoraro of Gorham; her eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and her three siblings, Rosemary Lusky of Fryeburg, Elmo Greene of Poland and Thomas Greene of Saco.

Ellen is predeceased by her mom and dad, Ethel and Elmo Greene; and sister, Shirley Barber.
