Earle Young

PORTLAND — Earle R. Young, 91, of Portland, passed away with his family by his side on Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at Springbrook Nursing Center in Westbrook.

Earle was born on March 28, 1925. He was the son of Helen E. Keene and Fred A. Young. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Handley, on Jan. 3, 1948, in Newton, Mass., during a blinding snowstorm.

He was proud to serve as a captain and pilot in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge from the service, he completed his college degree and graduated from the University of New Hampshire.

He worked in the insurance industry for several years before he and Carolyn opened Young Travel Service in Portland. Earle loved to ski and was one of the original Downeast Ski Club Members at Pleasant Mountain, now Shawnee Peak. For several years, the whole family would celebrate Earle’s (aka Banky’s) birthday skiing together at Shawnee Peak. He helped out with the mountain’s handicap ski program for several years and skied into his early 80s.

Earle was a longtime member of the Riverside Golf Association.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Carolyn; and his grandson.

He is survived by his daughter, Gail Robinson of Portland; his son, Richard Young of Portland; his son, Peter Young of Windham; his four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held this summer at his camp on Highland Lake in Falmouth.
