Dr. Lawrence Gould

Dr. Lawrence Gould, 84, passed peacefully on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 from a long-standing illness. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death.

Dr. Gould was born in Boston, Mass. on Nov. 28, 1930 and educated in Boston schools.  He graduated from Boston Public Latin School in 1947, received his bachelor’s degree in Physics from M.I.T. in 1950, and his Ph.D. degree in Physics from M.I.T. in January 1954.

In September 1953, he joined Microwave Associates, Inc. as a Research Physicist.  Dr. Gould joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and was assigned to Evans Signal Laboratory. In 1956, upon discharge, he returned to Microwave Associates and in 1959 was appointed vice president and division manager.

Dr. Gould served as executive vice president and chief operating officer succeeding to the position of president of the corporation in May 1969, to chief executive officer in February 1975, and to chairman of the board in February 1978. The corporation became M/A-Com, Inc. in 1978. In 1978, Dr. Gould received M.I.T.’s Corporate Leadership Award.

Dr. Gould served M/A-Com, Inc. as chairman of the board and chief executive officer until July 1982. He served as a consultant to the corporation until Dec. 31, 1990.

In 1970, Dr. Gould along with two other partners developed Point Sebago in Casco. At the time, it was considered the first Resort Campground in the United States. Dr. Gould became sole owner in 1973. Through his vision and leadership, the resort expanded to become one of the best RV Golf Resorts in the country.

In 1983, Dr. Gould and Anna Gould founded Camp Sunshine at Point Sebago. The program provides a much-needed respite and psycho-social support to families with children suffering from terminal illness or under active treatment for life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease and other types of illness. This free-of-charge program is provided on 25 acres of land donated by Dr. Gould, owner of Point Sebago. The profound and positive impact on the spirit of these children and the bonds created within each family through their shared Camp Sunshine experience is a wonderful tribute to the shining example of charitable commitment that Dr. Gould set for us all.

Dr. Gould is survived by his three children, Martin Gould, Howard Gould and Laurie Gould Sukoff; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were private. A memorial service will be held in Maine at a future date.
