Dr. James C. Goodchild

SACO — Dr. James Carleton Goodchild, 90, formerly of Saco and Newton, Mass., passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2010 at the Monarch Center in Saco.

Carl was born in Chelmsford, Mass. on March 15, 1920, the son of George and Nina Wood Goodchild.

He came to Maine at a young age and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1939. Carl attended and graduated from the University of Maine. After college, he joined the U.S. Army and during his service he received several awards including two purple hearts, two Bronze Stars and the Silver Star. Many years later, he would write a memoir entitled, “The Cat Has Twelve Lives,” about his career in the Army during World War II. Upon completion of his service, he enrolled and later graduated from Tufts Dental School in Massachusetts. He practiced dentistry in Needham, Mass. for over 40 years.

Carl enjoyed golf, the piano, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid sports fan.

Carl is predeceased by a brother, Donald Goodchild, and a sister, Lorraine Taylor.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Barbara Lamb Goodchild of Saco; two sons, Dana Goodchild of Medway, Mass. and Dale Goodchild of Bridgton.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. Arrangements are by Dennett, Craig & Pate, 365 Main St., Saco, Maine.
