Dorothy H. Roberts, 94

HARRISON — Dorothy H. Roberts, 94, died peacefully at her Harrison home on Monday, Sept. 7, 2015.

Dorothy was born on May 16, 1921, in Haverhill, Mass., to Esther and John Bruyere, and was the oldest of six siblings.

Dorothy met her husband, Donel, on a blind date and, according to him, "it must have stuck" because they were married on Nov. 22, 1940. Together they raised their three children, Linda, Donel Jr., and Kenneth in Sudbury, Mass.

Dorothy worked as the Assistant Town Accountant for the town of Sudbury, for many years, and she and her husband were very well-known members of their tight-knit community.

During her retirement years Dorothy and her husband summered at their lakefront home in Harrison, and wintered in Florida.

Dorothy was a very talented woman whose creativity shone in her many artistic endeavors. Dorothy was a whiz at the sewing machine and used to whip up all sorts of clothes for her children and grandchildren. She was a skilled jewelry-maker and silver-smith and would create beautiful pieces of jewelry to give as gifts. She even made her husband a new wedding ring when the original no longer fit. She liked to dabble in watercolor and once won an award for one of her wildlife paintings.

Dorothy was always up for an adventure and loved to travel. She was an avid swimmer and enjoyed many summers swimming in Long Lake. She enjoyed entertaining friends and family and was an amazing cook. She also loved to garden and some of her best dishes were made with ingredients she had grown herself. Often she would send a pack of grandchildren out with buckets to collect blackberries or blueberries, and she would always reward their work with a delicious treat.

Dorothy will be dearly missed by her beloved husband Donel; her three children, Linda, Donel Jr., and Kenneth; her two daughters-in-law, Elizabeth and Nancy; her seven grandchildren, Jessica, Trevor, Jena, Sara, Tyler, Abby and Kyleigh; and her five great-grandchildren, William, Patrick, Lilian, Benjamin and Reed.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chandler Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton, Maine. The Funeral mass will be on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Bridgton, followed by a private graveside service in Sudbury, Mass. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Meals on Wheels. Online condolences may be shared with her family at www.chandlerfunerals.com
