Dorothea C. Lowell

GORHAM — Dorothea Cobb Lowell passed away peacefully on July 14, 2011, at the Casco Country Village Assisted Living Center.

She was a longtime resident of North Gorham.

She was born in Windham on Oct. 18, 1916, the daughter of the late Arthur and Alta (Plummer) Cobb. She attended Windham schools, graduating in 1934. She played basketball for Windham and her team won the state championship that year, a proud memory. She married her high school sweetheart, Ernest Lowell in 1934, and they enjoyed a long, loving marriage for 63 years, until his death in 1997.

Dorothea was a very active member of the North Gorham Church, UCC, all of her married life. She worked as a cook for Maine Medical Center and at St. Joseph’s College, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family on the farm. Christmas Eve at Nana’s on the farm was a wonderful time for all the family. She handed out coffee and good food and love in equal amounts in her kitchen every day.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Shirley Josephine Lowell, who died in 1935.

She is survived by three daughters, Janet Rich of Windham, Joyce Pike of Casco, and Dale Lowell of Standish; eight grandsons; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Cobb of Windham.

A memorial service was held at the North Gorham Church, UCC, North Gorham on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. A reception immediately followed the church service in the church hall. Private burial will be in the Windham Hill Cemetery, Windham. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.
