CASCO — Doris Floyd Moses, 92, formerly of Standish, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at the Casco Inn Residential Care Facility with her family by her side.
She was born on April 23, 1922 in Plainfield, N.J., the daughter of James R. and Roberta T. Floyd. During her years at Plainfield High School, Doris participated in chorus and glee club. She served as secretary of the freshman class and treasurer of her senior class. Following graduation, Doris went on to earn a degree in education from Glassboro State Teachers College. Her first job as a teacher was at Plainfield Elementary School.
From a very early age, Doris spent her summers at the family cottage on Panther Pond in Raymond. It would be here on the shores of Panther Pond she would meet the love of her life, and future husband, S. Preston Moses. They were married for 63 years.
Doris and Preston moved to Portland in 1947. After moving to Portland, she taught at the North School in Portland, and Sunday school at Woodfords Congregational Church. In the early 1960s, they purchased a cottage on Highland Lake in Falmouth where they would meet people who would become their lifelong friends. In 1971, Doris and Preston moved to their home on Sebago Lake.
During her life, she served on the Women’s Board for Maine Medical Center and volunteered in the coffee shop at MMC two days a week. She also volunteered at the Jones Museum on Douglass Mountain in Sebago.
Doris loved bowling, canoeing, tennis, gardening, playing the piano, singing and bridge. In later years, Doris and Preston enjoyed spending winters in Florida. She enjoyed spending time with the family, watching her grandchildren grow, and socializing with friends.
Doris was predeceased by her husband S. Preston Moses; and brother, James Floyd.
She is survived by her three sons, William B. Moses III of Standish, James P. Moses of Westbrook and Robert L. Moses of Biddeford; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, from 12 p.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham.
