CASCO — Donald R. “Donnie” Smith, 69, passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family following a long battle with COPD.

Born in Portland on June 12, 1947, he was the son of the late Edna Hutchinson Smith and the late Robert Smith Jr. He grew up in Windham and attended Windham H.S., making many lifelong friendships there.

In his earlier years, Donnie worked for Poland Telephone Company, at various construction jobs, as an insurance salesman, and then at the Maine State Correctional Center in Windham. After moving to Florida around 1990, he enjoyed being a property manager on the Treasure Island, Florida, waterfront. He retired and returned to Maine in 2015.

Donnie was an avid sports fan and a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan. He loved camping, all types of music, reading, Facebook and a good prime rib dinner! He truly loved all of his family and friends and, of course, his Scottie dog, Cooper. He will be sadly missed by all of them.

He is survived by his of wife of almost 46 years, Brenda; his daughter, Michelle Smith of Casco; his sister, Diane Monty of Raymond; and grandchildren, Zachary McGarey of Clearwater, Fla., Frank Trago of Willow Grove, Pa., and Delilah Schmitt of Brooksville, Fla. He is also survived by his uncle, Ralph Fitzgerald of St. Petersburg, Fla.; aunts Ada Ridlon of Windham and Betty Wyman of Windham; and an extended wonderful, supportive family of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A special thanks to Androscoggin Home Health & Hospice for their kind support and care during his final difficult weeks.

A graveside memorial service will be held in the Spring at Murch Cemetery in South Casco. Details will be communicated at that time.
