David L. Thompson, 69

David Thompson

RAYMOND — David Lloyd Thompson, 69, of Raymond quietly left this life on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at his home in Raymond with his loving wife at his side.

He was the son of Eleanor Jean Thompson and the late Lloyd Thompson, born on March 28, 1951 in Portland. He was born into a military family and was raised in many different places in the United States and around the world. Growing up, he spent several years in Spain and Bermuda, where he graduated from Kingsley Air Force High School in 1969.

David enlisted in the United States Army on Sept. 11, 1970 at the height of the Vietnam War. He spent four years active duty before earning on honorable discharge and eventually returning home to Maine.

David met his wife, Cathleen, in 1978 in Portland and they were married on July 16, 1982. They spent the next 38 years raising a family and remained unconditionally devoted to one another. They lived in Naples for most of those 40 years, but eventually settled on a piece of property in Raymond.

David was an independent business owner, which allowed him to live life by his own set of rules. His life’s passion was found in his family and his children; Sean, Alec and Jamie Thompson. He was a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed spending time with his boys, partaking in outside activities such as fishing and camping. He especially enjoyed taking his boys on camping trips to Acadia National Park. He was loved in the Naples community as an exceptional Little League baseball coach and was very active within the league. His boys would be hard pressed to remember a practice or game that he missed.

David spent much of his leisure time at a small family-owned beach on Raymond Pond. He was often found atop his 1950’s era Farmall tractor, working on the beach or around the camp that his grandfather had built when he was a child. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and gave back to the veteran community as a member of the Patriot Guard motorcycle club. David was also known to swing a few golf clubs from time to time and was excellent at casting a fly line.

His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his family.

David is survived by his wife, Cathleen; his mother, Eleanor Thompson of Raymond; three sons, Sean Thompson of Scarborough, Alec Thompson of Buxton, Jamie Thompson of Bridgton; and two grandsons, Owen and Abram Thompson of Buxton.

A memorial graveside service at the Raymond Hill Cemetery with military honors recognizing David’s service will be announced at a later date.
