David I. Philbrook Sr., 78, of West Newfield and formerly of Naples passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at a Portsmouth, N.H. hospital with his family by his side.

He was born in Rockland on Jan. 11, 1936, a son of Ivan A. and Naida H. (Ainsworth) Philbrook. He graduated from Rockland High School. He spent his childhood and was raised on Matinicus Island, and as a teenager worked as a lobsterman.

David proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years, and served another 37 years in the Naval Reserves. He also worked as a diesel mechanic for several companies on the Portland waterfront before retiring from Atlantic Fuel Injection in Windham, where he worked many years.

He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #155 in Naples, where he also served as a past commander. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, as well as riding his tractor and golf cart “dune buggy.” He was also a very accomplished builder, woodworker and craftsman, building two homes for his family, building boats and dollhouses, among many things. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Ivan A. Philbrook II.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra Philbrook of West Newfield; three daughters, Diana Nappi of Naples, Kimberly Haskell of West Newfield and Vicki Waterhouse of Norway; a son, David Philbrook Jr. of Norway; a brother, Leroy Philbrook of Thomaston; a sister, Sandra Dickinson of Charlestown, N.H.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Post #155, located off Route 11 in Naples.
