WINDHAM — Daniel Leonard Heller, 35, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, April 9. 2016.

Dan, born in Norway, on Nov. 3, 1980, was the son of William and Deborah Heller. Dan was a hard worker and a person of many talents. He graduated from Lake Region High School, where he played varsity football for three years. He took third place in the State Championships for his weight class at the end of his first of two years of varsity wrestling. He was a lifelong skier and a frequent presence at Sugarloaf. He was a martial arts competitor in his earlier years.

Dan was in the Army Reserves, and received the Robert Pries Leadership Award for the Second Battalion 47th Infantry while in Baltimore. Later, he showcased his leadership skills by becoming the supervisor for the build crew for Aura 360 Ventures, with whom he traveled extensively setting up competitive obstacle course events from Sunday River to California. He assisted Don Heller and Kim Washam in their antique business, doing shows around the country. Dan was also a professional chef, starting at the Nantucket Yacht Club, and going on to work at Rick’s Café in Naples, and Casa Napoli in Falmouth Foreside. He helped his grandparents renovate their home on Peaks Island. He worked for a number of local roofers, where he became a lead man. Friends will miss his irreverent humor.

He was predeceased by his mother; and brother, James Goodwin.

He is survived by his wife, Lorina Bonin, of Windham; his father, William Heller of Mexico; his uncle and his aunt; his grandparents, Howard and Betty Heller of Scarborough; and a large circle of friends.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at noon Saturday, April 30, at Deering Memorial Post 6859 (VFW Hall), 687 Forest Avenue, Portland. Flowers may be sent to the VFW Hall.
