Committee selects 2013 Lake Region Hall of Fame inductees

 

The Lake Region High School Hall of Fame will induct six new members this winter.

The eight-member Hall of Fame Committee selected the following as members of the Class of 2013:

• Ivy Ward-Spencer, Class of 1974; four-year varsity basketball player; top defensive field hockey player, captain her junior and senior years; track & field captain, sprinter and javelin thrower.

• Robert Mayo, Class of 1980; All-Conference baseball (led the team in hitting twice), basketball (led the league in scoring).

• Adria Lowell-Carr, Class of 1988; All-Conference and captain of field hockey and basketball teams; All-State track & field, set the school record in the long jump that stood for over a decade.

• Samantha Stewart Merchant, Class of 1995; All-Conference and All-State field hockey player, who set a single-season scoring record; All-Conference basketball and golf.

• Meghan Gately Giroux, Class of 2001; three-time Carol Youker Award winner, three-time state alpine ski champion, All-State skier, member of the LRHS girls’ state championship team (alpine and Nordic results combined), four-year varsity soccer starter and three-year varsity softball starter.

• Samantha Allen, Class of 2006; All-Conference, All-State basketball, Miss Maine Finalist, Mike DiRenzo Award winner (MVP of the 2006 Western Maine tournament) and Bob Butler Basketball Award recipient.

“Based on your career and contributions to the athletic program during your tenure at Lake Region High School, your collegiate experience, as well as, your continued excellence after school, the (Hall of Fame) committee determined that your achievements should be recognized. We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to your induction,” wrote Lake Region Athletic Director and Hall of Fame Committee member Paul True.

The induction ceremony will be moved this year from Homecoming to a date in January.

Last year, inductees included Brian Clement (1986), Kevin Hancock (1984), Sandy Kobrock (1973), Chris Whitney (1981) and Coach Ken Whitney (1981-1992).

Past inductees include: Tom Clow (1974), Cindy Fagan (1975)0, Wanda Ward-Maclean (1977), Gary Speed (1977), Lee-Lee Morrison (1978), Matt Hancock (1985), Arlene Hudson (1985), Erich Reed (1985), Tia Theriault (1986), David Kilborn (1985), Debbie Libby (1981) and Coaches Art Kilborn Jr. (1969 to present) and Linda Whitney (1969-2000).

Nominations can be made by members of the public, former coaches, etc. Criteria for athletes include:

• Must have competed in at least one varsity sport for Lake Region High School.

• Must have completed all seasons participated as an athlete in good standing.

• Must have been recognized for outstanding achievement at the team and school, conference and recognized at the state level or multiple conference citations.

• An athlete is eligible for Hall of Fame consideration five years after graduation from high school.

Criteria for coaches include:

• Must have coached a varsity sport at Lake Region High School for at least three years.

• Must have performed all coaching responsibilities in a professional manner.

• Must have left employment as athletic coach in good standing with the athletic department and the school.

• Program success (W/L).

• Recognition (Coach of the Year).

A third category is Fans/Contributor. The nominee must have been a positive contributor to the Lake Region athletic scene through deeds and actions or generosity.
