Charles L. Hazelton, 83

NAPLES — Charles L. Hazelton, 83, passed away Thursday evening, March 26, 2015, at Ledgeview Living Center.

He was born in Naples, a son of Ellen (Norman) and Merle L Hazelton. Charles was a lifelong resident of Naples, and graduated from Bridgton High School in 1950. He began work with Lane Construction on Route 128 in Massachusetts. Returning to Maine, he worked 18 years for Burnham Bros. in Naples, where he was noted as an expert grader operator. He later spent 27 years with the Maine D.O.T., retiring as a road supervisor. Charles served as a Naples school board member and in 1961 was appointed to a committee of seven by the selectmen to study the formation of an administrative school district. In 1966 The State Board of Education approved the district of S.A.D. 61, which opened in the fall of 1968. Charles continued as a Naples director until 1973.

He loved his family and home, enjoying trout fishing, hunting, golf and cribbage. Charles was a member of the Maine State Employees Assoc. and Maine Assoc. of Retirees.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Ruth (Stiles); two daughters, Ruth B. of Portland, Sharon (Staggs) of Mass.; three sons, Charles R. (Karen and her son David) of N.H., Steven of Va., Merle (Lillian) of Va.; grandchildren, Sarah and Nicholas Hazelton, Margaret Ann, Elizabeth, John Hazelton, Clifford Hazelton; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Merlene Morgan of Naples and Mary Boiani of R.I.; and nieces and nephews.

An hour of visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Hall Funeral Home, Casco. A brief service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. A family burial will be at the Naples Village Cemetery.
