BUXTON — Burnall L. “Satch” Page, 88, of Groveville, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Burnie was born in Penobscot, on Aug. 12, 1926, the second son of Perley and Margaret Deans Page. He attended Bucksport High School, graduating in 1944. He entered the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the minesweeper, USS Doyle. His tour of duty took him to several Atlantic and Pacific ports. Following his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Burnie attended Gorham State Teacher’s College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Education in 1952. He later went on to receive his master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono.

He taught for 12 years in the Deer Isle, Bingham, Fort Fairfield, Saco and Scarborough school systems, where he served as middle school principal for the latter. He was a member of the SAD 6 Board of Directors for six years.

He joined McGraw-Hill Publishers and sold educational books throughout New England and upstate New York for 35 years, retiring in 1996.

Burnie earned his nickname “Satch” while playing varsity baseball on his college team. He was inducted into the University of Southern Maine Sports Hall of Fame in September of 2011.

Burnie was a longtime member of the Marine Masonic Lodge in Deer Isle, and the Shriners Kora Temple. He was also active in local politics in the towns of Hollis and Buxton, and in the Cressey Road and Buxton United Methodist Churches.

One of his favorite pastimes, besides playing golf, was umpiring Little League baseball games in Hollis and Standish. Burnie enjoyed traveling with his wife, Gayle, who passed away in 2010. Together, they journeyed to Bermuda, Canada, and Scotland, and spent several weeks at their timeshares in Rockland and Wells; he also enjoyed the company of his “Newfie"”Moses.

He was predeceased by his former wife, Barbara; and his son, Trent.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Hinkley of Gray; stepson Troy Haskell of Lovell; stepdaughter Heather Cabading; five grandchildren; and a niece.

Visiting hours were held on Friday, March 27, at the Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State Street, Gorham. A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 28, at the Buxton United Methodist Church, Chicopee Road, Buxton. Burial will be in the spring at Highland Cemetery, Buxton.
