A Bridgton couple died Wednesday as the result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Route 302 in Casco.
Carol Honaberger, 70, died at the scene by Watkins Flat in Casco. Police say Honaberger was operating a 2000 Dodge Caravan, traveling west on Route 302 when her vehicle collided with a 2014 Chevy Equinox, operated by Allen Estes, 66, of Standish. Estes was traveling east at about 1:50 p.m.
Carol’s husband, Dale, 81, was taken to Bridgton Hospital by Casco Rescue. He passed away that evening as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
Estes suffered broken bones and other non-life threatening injuries and was released from the scene, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.
The Honabergers’ Golden Retriever Therapy Dog suffered broken legs and was transported for emergency treatment by Animal Control Officers.
The Honabergers operated The Lamp and Shade Shop from a barn of their Main Street home. Dale was a member of a local brass band, which played over the years during Christmas in Harrison. He also was a familiar figure at Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day services, playing “Taps.”
