Barbara Cousins

WESTBROOK — Barbara Elizabeth Spiller Cousins, 84, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, surrounded by her family at the Gorham House after a period of declining health.

Barbara was born Dec. 28, 1931, in Portland, to Lawrence and Rose Currie Spiller. Barbara attended Bolsters Mills Schools and graduated from Bridgton Academy, and then went on to graduate from Gray’s Business School. Barbara had fond memories of her childhood living in a small community. Her father ran The Spiller’s Store in Bolsters Mills and her mother was the Postmaster. During World War II Barbara would ride her bike around town during the blackout times. This was so when the air raids happened she had to make sure that all lights were out. Barbara loved her little community so much that in 1997 Barbara organized a Bolsters Mills School Reunion with classmates coming from all over the county.

Barbara married Edward “Sonny” Cousins on May 19, 1956, at the Bell Hill Church in Otisfield. They shared 60 years together. Barbara worked at the Deering High School, The Portland Gas Company and was a stay-at-home mom for many years, and later went on to run Cousins Adult Foster Care. Barbara was a caretaker to all, taking care of her mother, aunts and friends at her home. Barbara and Sonny enjoyed many trips to Nova Scotia, Canada, visiting many family members that she loved so dearly. Once Barbara and Sonny retired they went on many vacations with her Cousin Evelyn and John Woodbury. Evelyn was her cousin but Barbara loved her like a sister.

Barbara was predeceased by her father Lawrence Spiller; her mother Rose Currie Spiller; and her dear cousin Evelyn Woodbury.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Edward “Sonny” Cousins, of Westbrook. She also leaves behind two daughters, Donna and Ken Davis of Westbrook and Cindy and Lance Reny of Monmouth; four grandsons, Brandon Lund of Westbrook, Ryan Lund of Hollis, Joshua Reny of Monmouth and Andrew Reny of Monmouth; one great-grandson, Bradley Reny of Monmouth; two sisters-in-law, Kay Cousins of Bridgton, Judy and Thomas Schultz of Lake Tavares, Florida; one brother-in-law, Phillip and Emma Cousins of Arab, Alabama; one very dear son-in-law, E. Vincent Lund of Buxton. Barbara also leaves behind many nieces and nephews that she loved so dearly.

The family would like to thank the staff at Gorham House. Your care and compassion over the past few months have been exceptional! A special thank you to Angela at Compassus Hospice team for caring for our Mom.

A Spring Memorial will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at 11 a.m., at the Oakdale Cemetery in Otisfield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in honor of Barbara to the Gorham House Activity Fund, 50 New Portland Rd., Gorham, ME 04038. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Casco.
