Avis B. Whittaker, 84

PALM HARBOR, FLA. — Avis B. Whittaker, 84, most recently of Palm Harbor, Fla., passed away on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015.
Avis was born in Hiram on April 25, 1930, the daughter of Charles R. Bean and Alma Olson Bean. She was raised in Hiram and eventually moved to the Fryeburg area, where she graduated from Fryeburg Academy. While in Fryeburg, she was instrumental in the development of the town’s Red Cross Swimming Lesson program and taught swimming lessons for several years at Weston’s Beach. She worked at Yield House in North Conway, N.H., eventually assuming a management role. After leaving Yield House, she moved to West Buxton and was hired by Sturbridge Yankee Workshop as vice president of operations. After retiring, she moved to the Rockland area where she lived for many years, where she was an avid reader and enjoyed working in her garden.
Avis is survived by her sons, Ryan T. of San Angelo, Texas, Robert N. Jr. of Fryeburg and Scott C. of Clearwater, Fla.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be a private graveside service in Hiram at a future date.
