Arthur Cannell Jr.

Arthur “Glen” Glenwood Cannell Jr., 68, of Bridgton, died Thursday, May 31, 2018, at the Bridgton Healthcare Center, after losing his fight to Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was born in Bridgton on Oct. 15, 1949, a son to Arthur and Hilda Cannell. He attended Bridgton High School.

Glen, a name by which most people knew him, was a very hardworking man, working for places such as Pleasant Mountain (now Shawnee Peak), Pleasant Mountain Moccasin (known also as Sebago Shoe Shop), and Chipco. He joined the United States Army in 1968, where he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, in support of the Vietnam War, as an equipment maintenance/repair engineer. He was released early with an honorable discharge in 1971. He received a National Defense Service Medal.

Glen enjoyed spending time with his family at reunions, luncheons, and random get-togethers, and loved going for rides on the old back roads, enjoyed classic country music, watching NASCAR, football, baseball, and old westerns. He was always willing to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. Glen will always be remembered for his kindness.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Joan May Mains; a son Daniel Cannell, and his wife Jeannie of Ludlow, Vt.; a daughter Marcia Gray, and her partner Tracy of Monmouth. He will always be “Grampa” and “Papa” to eight grandchildren, Christopher, Bailey, Kyle, Austin, Elisabeth, Cheyenne, Hannah and Jared. He is also survived by two sisters, Marcia Bradley of Waldport, Ore., Mary Arndt of Harrison; a brother Walter Cannell, and wife Pat, of Bridgton; a very close brother-in-law, Kenneth Durfee of Bridgton. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Glen was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Hilda Cannell; as well as, four sisters, Joyce Cannell, Susan Durfee, Judy Nevers, and Daphne Martin.

At Glen’s request there will be no visiting hours, and no funeral service. His wish was for his loved ones to remember him as he was. There will be a Celebration of his life, which will be determined, at a later date.
