Anne MicKanin, 89

PORTLAND — Anne MicKanin, 89, died Thursday morning, April 11, 2013.

She had been a resident at the Barron Center in Portland for the past several years, charming those who worked with her by a persistently clever wit.

She was born in Lakewood, Ohio, on Sept. 3, 1923, but lived in Southern California for most of her life.

Her only child, Deborah, was born on her birthday in 1947. She moved to Maine to be with her daughter and grandchildren about 25 years ago and lived with them for several years, becoming a stalwart Red Sox fan.

She worked for many years in the food service industry, enjoyed cooking and eating, country music, and was an avid crafter. An animal lover, she rescued many creatures and enjoyed the company of her dogs and turtles.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Gideon of Raymond; her granddaughter in New York City; her grandson in Sausalito, Calif.; and a sister who still lives in California.

A private memorial service will be held in her honor off the coast of California. Arrangements are under the direction of Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services, 981 Forest Avenue, Portland.
