Anna J. Laws

KENNEBUNK — Anna Laws, 82, formerly of Mt. Vernon, Va., passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2011.

She was born on Jan. 25, 1929, in Rollinsford, N.H., the daughter of Ellen (Wentworth) and Evangelos Janetos. Anna attended Douglas College in New Jersey and graduated from UNH in 1951. In New Jersey, she met and married Andrew Matyas in 1952. Andrew, a USAF career officer, moved with Anna and two daughters over the next 16 years from Maine to Texas to Nebraska and finally to Mt. Vernon, Va. Lt. Col. Matyas was killed in Vietnam in 1968. In 1972, Anna married Capt. Walter Laws, USN living in Mt. Vernon, Va., 26 years, until he passed away in 1998.

Anna taught middle school Home Economics in Virginia, retiring in 1981. She was a member and Regent (1994-1996) of the Kate Waller Barrett Chapter of DAR in Northern Virginia, and while in Maine, active with the Rebecca Emery Chapter.

Anna is survived by her brothers, George, Lewis, Paul and Andrew Janetos, all of Rollinsford, N.H.; a sister, Barbara Johansen of Nashua, N.H.; her daughters, Lynn Ann Rollins of Casco and Mary Boswell of Kennebunkport; her grandson and her stepgrandson; four stepchildren, David Laws, Richard Laws, Shelley Simmerman and Patrice Murphy; 13 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

Anna was predeceased by her sister, Mary Bandouveres of Rollinsford in November 2010.

Visitation hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 5-7 p.m., at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, Dover, N.H. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m., at the First Parish UCC Congregational Church, 176 West High St., Somersworth, N.H. Interment will be in May.
